The Chrysler Building is an Art Deco style skyscraper in New York City, located on the east side of Manhattan. At 1,046 feet (319 m), the structure was the world's tallest building for 11 months before it was surpassed by the Empire State Building in 1931. It is still the tallest brick building in the world, albeit with an internal steel skeleton. The Chrysler Building is a classic example of Art Deco architecture and considered by many contemporary architects to be one of the finest buildings in New York City.
The Electric in Birmingham is the UK’s oldest working cinema and is now home to sofas, a bar and waiter service. It has two digital screens and show a mixture of the latest quality mainstream, independent, foreign and classic films.
Empire State Building is one of the world's most iconic buldings that has appeared in more than 250 films, including ‘King Kong’, ‘On the Town’, Lullaby of Broadway and (my favourite) ‘An Affair to Remember’. It was the world's tallest building until the World Trade Centre was built in the 1970’s. Construction began just weeks before the Wall Street Crash of 1929 and two years later when it opened and space was almost impossible to let, it was saved from bankruptcy by the immediate popularity of the observatories. The framework, made from 60,000 tonnes of steel was built in 23 weeks, using 10,000,000 bricks to line the building and more than 200 steel and concrete piles support the 365,000 tonne building!
The famous 86th floor outdoor observation decks offer amazing views over the New York skyline but the 102nd floor obAAservatory is part of the 150 ft zeppelin mooring mast which now transmits TV and radio to the surrounding 4 states. From here you can see over 78 miles on a clear day! Being a natural lightning conductor, the building is struck more than 500 times a year and during a storm the outside deck is closed but it's safe to view the excitement from inside.
I have a special place in my heart for the Empire State Building as my husband and I were married on the 102nd floor!
